Work in progress – children’s book illustration

There is a lot more yet to be done on the picture at right, but this new work represents a bit of a departure for me, both thematically and in execution.

This is a children’s book illustration for someone I know who is working on a manuscript. A young girl (of perhaps 15) stands on the deck of a fantastic sailing ship, having just fed the starlings and watching them descend upon the feeder for seed (for any ornithologists in the house, those are supposed to be purple backed starlings, not the darker colored North American starlings).

There is still a lot to be done, but the author is pretty enthusiastic about what I have done so far, so I think I am on the right track.
