WTF Marriage?

Same sex marriage still seems to be a pressing issue that govenors, congressmen, senators and presidents all seem to need to spend a lot of time thinking and talking aboutI think ‘vote for us is a vote against same sex marriage’ was a campaign promise by Dubya and Darth Vader in BOTH of their campaigns for the Whitehouse. Up until recently John McCain was still desperately seeking relevance with the only people who will still listen to him (retired Veterans in VFW halls) by saying that he would only accept dropping “don’t ask don’t tell” in the military if the Pentagon said they thought it was a good idea, then the Pentagon said they were ready to drop it so McCain said he really wanted to hear from a plurality of soldiers so the plurality of soldiers were asked and said it would be OK and McCain said that he didn’t like how the plurality had been chosen… etc. Obama is still ‘uncomfortable’ with gay marriage (what the hell does that mean?). The leadership of the Catholic church can’t seem to commit to treating sexual abuse by priests as a crime but OH GOD NO DON’T LET THE GAYS GET MARRIED. And, as stupid as the Catholic Bishops’ reaction is, the reaction from their Evangelical cousins is even worse… which is ironic given that an unusual number of religious leaders and politicians who have sucked up to the Religious Right by campaigning against gay marriage have also been caught ‘catching some’ in public rest rooms or hireing rent boys to help them ‘lift their luggage.’ For as long as I can remember this issue has been front and center in American politics and it just will not go away yet.
Why is this issue so complicated? With all the other problems we have, why are so many people still fixated on keeping gay people from getting married? I’m not gay but I don’t understand how it could possibly harm me if someone else marries someone of the same sex. It’s not as if I have to send a gift if I don’t approve.

Here in MN, the Republican dominated legislature started the session saying “Our #1 priority is jobs” and ended by passing a constitutional amendment ballot initiative against marriage equality. No budget passed, with one week to go, and a pending government shutdown that may last for up to three months.
It's absolutely bizarre isn't it? Here in Australia we have an atheist Prime Minister who actively supports having non-qualified evangelical pastoral care in government schools (as opposed to qualified non-religious social workers and counsellors), put in place by her Christian predecessor. And one of her senior ministers, a lesbian, who refuses to support same-sex marriage. These people must surely be from another dimension.
I don't get it either. Everyone should have the right to marry whomever they want. At least we have taken the right steps here in Illinois.
Not that I care a whit one way or the other, but Cheney actually supported gay marriage. Dubya not so much. It was a news item during the 2004 campaign, as I recall.
The system seemed to have no problem sanctioning my “different-sex” divorce from my first wife. Why “same-sex” marriage is anathema baffles me.
In my experience such a glaring disconnect is only justified by government (in all 3 branches) pandering to the so-called moral majority for votes and lobbyist dollars.
Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness seems to apply only if you're straight. Sad and backwards.
It all has to do with tax dollars and insurance benefits. They (opposition to same-sex marriage) only want “traditional” families to benefit from being a family. Totally gay, I know.

It's bread, circuses, and two thousand years of social evolution. Who cares about wars and the like, when we have marriage to argue about?
Finally some sensible news from NY State… although I'm sure that histrionics and promises of hellfire and damnation will commence shortly.
This was my Facebook status last night, I am from NY obviously-
“You know what? I am glad NY has finally passed a same-sex marriage law. I have always considered this to be a civil rights issue and I am neither a homophobe nor a religious zealot. I am however an ordained minister and will be happy to perform wedding ceremonies for gay couples the day the governor signs this into law.”
-As it turns out, the governor already signed it, but there is a 30 day waiting period written into the law; but the sentiment remains the same.
The 9th District Court hearing over California's Proposition 8 – a state constitutional amendment that only acknowledges heterosexual marriages – is finally coming to an end. I find it funny, that this is coming from a state where being a tree-hugging, gay-marriage-supporting, bleeding-heart make one a “conservative”. Even though the state economy was going down the shit-hole – with schools and essential services facing eminent closure – supporters raised millions for what is otherwise a huge dick move. Its hard to be sympathetic for the supporters (or take seriously), as all they did was whine bitch, and moan, as well as making themselves look like bigger dicks, with shitless legal actions.
All-and-all, the only good that has done, was to set up a condition, where gay married couples are vary reluctant to get divorced, and will remain married out of principal, even if they come to hate each other… basically, a traditional, loveless marriage. 😛
