U-Con?
Posted: July 31, 2012 Filed under: project, weird 5 CommentsI think I have been to 3 cons in about 40 years… and for one of them, I went to support a friend who was premiering a video at the con (I was in it — I was the guy who got stabbed through the eye socket with a crowbar in one scene and stabbed through the chest in another scene — that was fun). But U-Con will be happening in Ann Arbor on the weekend of October 28th… Ann Arbor is just a short drive away… and someone I have done some illustration work for (Goodman Games) has asked me if I want to go to the con and run a few games as an event to help promote DCC stuff. He’s a good guy and I want to do him a good turn, so I am seriously considering it — but I just never really liked ‘cons’ much like I never really liked going to the local comic book shop.
Maybe I have the wrong idea about them (cons)?
Maybe it will be different if I have a ‘task’ there?
One cool thing particular to U-Con is that is has historically always included a “Tekumel Trak”; with usually at least one or two souls that played in Barker's original group/s. IF you are into Tekumel at all, its worth going I'd think.
I haven't been to U-Con since I was in high school. Maybe I'll go this year…
I guess there is no real reason to be coy about it — the publisher is Goodman Games and they invited me to run some sort of DCC event there if I was interested. I don't know if I would be developing my own scenario or running an official DCC one… but my rules knowledge is really weak so I would have to sit down and actually read the DCC book and commit relevant parts to memory between now and then.
Stephan – run a funnel – if you have played any version of D&D or it's various clones, you'll be fine.
Tenkar – I've been thinking of a fun scenario that would make (IMO) an excellent “funnel” adventure. If I run more than one event, maybe that could be one of them. I might ask my game group to indulge me in letting me dm it to them beforehand.
I suspect that what I would do is have a big stack of PCs and just let players get 3 or so at random. I might have some sort of small prize for the “winner” (based on highest number of points for most most goals attained and maybe secret ballot). If your PC dies, you get a new one (spawning just off screen and wandering in I guess) but maybe you lose a point for that. At the end of the game, the player with the most points wins!
