“The Evil Underground: Chapter 2” (slightly nsfw)

Longtime followers of the blog may remember when I presented chapter 1 of a biographical comic book I was working on about the life of Richard S. Shaver (artist, conspiracy theorist, author, paleo-archeologist, philologist and philosopher).  If you haven’t yet read it, go back and read chapter 1 before you read chapter 2.

You can click on each page, below, to see a bigger version.

I’m writing the chapters as I go (which may or may not be the best way of going about this; I don’t know).  The story is ‘true’ (at least from the narrator’s point of view; objective truth or whether or not Shaver was psycho are not my interest).  The next chapter will probably involve Raymond Arnold Palmer and the famous “Mantong” letter.

At the current rate of production, I should have the whole thing done sometime around 2020 or so (sigh). Actually, I hope to have it done sooner, but every project I currently have on the workbench is unfinished and I’m getting a bit psycho feeling over not getting any single one done.  Evil Underground/Richard Shaver Comic will come out sometime after I finish ‘Exquisite Corpses’ v2… which should be sometime early next year (I hope).

  1. While I am completely sympathetic about having too many unfinished projects in the pipeline, I do wish you’d devote more time to your Shaver comic. It’s a story I think is fascinating on numerous levels and your art style is absolutely perfect for presenting it.

  2. I can’t wait to see more of it. I love Hollow Earth stuff, though I don’t know much about Shaver’s personal life. I’m incorporating the Deros into my campaign setting as a monstrous (non-playable) replacement for dwarves. Anyway, I look forward to seeing where you go with this. It reminded me a bit (though your style is very different) of R. Crumb’s biographic piece on Philip K. Dick.

Jeremy: I love the Crumb story on P. K. Dick, so I’m flattered by the comparison.

Bravo. This latest batch seems to be an evolutionary step from the first pages which were also great. Keep up the good work, Steph!

Your comic is great! The art-style really complements the overall feel of the story. I hear you with the unfinished projects — with artists, it comes with the territory. I’m looking forwards to the next chapter, when it comes.

Just found chapter 2, after liking what you did with chapter 1 back when you posted it. Glad you are continuing this, regardless of how long it might take. It’s an interesting story, and yes your art style is great for it.

I just discovered this 2nd chapter of your Richard Shaver comic book. Great work! I’m going to put a link to it on the Richard Shaver page I manage on Facebook. I can’t find chapter 1. Is it still available?
